As pumped as Price Peters is about the chance to play college baseball, at the moment he’s more excited about the prospects for this spring.

Peters, who on Tuesday signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Southern Union State Community College, will be the starting catcher for the LaGrange Grangers when the season opens in a few weeks.

“Now that signing day is over, I’m more focused on getting our team prepared, especially for the (LaGrange Invitational) and all the good teams,” Peters said. “And I’m focused on making it deep into the playoffs. That’s what my main focus is.”

How well the Grangers do this season will have a lot do with the performance of the 6-foot-5 Peters, who began making appearances in the starting lineup as a sophomore and has developed into an everyday catcher.

While Peters is a versatile player who could play a lot of different positions, LaGrange head coach Todd Herrington said he’s needed behind the plate.

“Price is a guy who could play the outfield for us, he could pitch for us if we ever needed him to. He’s got a really good arm,” Herrington said. “But he’s our catcher. It’s a really important position.”

Herrington said as good as Peters is now, he still has plenty of room for improvement.

“He’s got a lot of tools. He’s got a lot of upswing to him,” Herrington said. “In the past several months, he’s really starting to hone in on his schools, and really starting to realize his potential. You say this a lot, but the sky really is the limit for him. Once he realizes the ability he has with his big body and his strong arm, he can really do some special things if he wants to.”
