A treasurer of the Troup County Democratic Party has resigned after he was suspected of embezzlement.
The LaGrange Police Department was contacted Thursday by TCDP chairman Katie Harris to conduct an investigation into suspected misappropriation of party funds.
After reviewing records Friday, police determined that the treasurer, William Joseph Crosby, 30, of Hogansville, “had misused funds entrusted in him in violation of the agreement and legal obligation,” according to a police department release.
Crosby was charged with theft by conversion and booked into the Troup County Jail. He later was released on $6,600 bail.
Harris said Crosby’s term as treasurer for the party began Dec. 17, 2012. In response to the embezzlement charge, the Democratic Executive Committee accepted Crosby’s resignation.
Police were investigating.
