After winning a combined nine games the previous three seasons, the Lady Cavaliers have won 14 games this season, and they’re the number three seed in the Region 4-AAA tournament.
The Lady Cavaliers (14-7) will get a chance to put another feather in their cap today when they take on Jackson in the region tournament at Douglass High in Atlanta.
If Callaway wins the game, it will not only advance to the region-tournament semifinals, but it will also secure an invitation to the Class AAA state tournament.
“At the beginning of the season, if you had told me we would be number three with a chance to punch our ticket to state, I would take it,” said Deyano Martin, Callaway’s second-year head coach. “But anything less than winning (today), it would be a disappointment at this point in the season.”
The Lady Cavaliers should be able to take care of business.
They beat Jackson twice in the regular season, and neither game was competitive.
Callaway beat Jackson 50-36 on Jan. 11, and 46-27 on Jan. 29.
While Callaway had a first-round bye in the tournament, Jackson beat Rockmart in a play-in game on Monday.
Martin said no one is taking Jackson lightly, though.
“They know how important this game is,” Jackson said. “I talked to them about, at this point in the season, the team that doesn’t show up will go home. That’s the bottom line.”
Martin added that Jackson is “going to come ready to play. And they played (at Douglass), so they’ve gotten used to the arena and used to the goals and all.”
Still, Martin believes if his team plays at its usual level, it will win.
If Callaway wins, it’s semifinal opponent would be Central-Carroll (20-5), the number two seed.
Central won both meetings with Callaway in the regular season.
“I think we should play well and win, and go back to practice on Thursday and try to fight Central-Carroll,” Martin said.
