After keeping their season alive with an easy win over the Columbus Blue Devils on Monday, the Tigers will face the Shaw Raiders today in an elimination game in the Region 5-AAAA tournament.
The winner moves on to the semifinals and guarantees itself a berth in the state tournament, while the season will be over for the loser.
The game tips off at 6 p.m. today at Shaw High.
Troup and Shaw split their two regular-season meetings.
On Jan. 22, Shaw won 59-48.
In the rematch, which was played Friday at Troup, the Tigers played arguably their best game of the season and won 61-51, knocking the Raiders out of contention for the top seed in the region tournament.
If the Tigers win today, they would advance to the tournament semifinals on Friday at Alexander.
“We go in saying we’re going to play hard until the end, and at the end, you never know what’s going to happen,” Troup head coach Thermond Billingslea said. “If you’re in it, you’ve got a chance.”
Billingslea said everyone is aware of how high the stakes are.
“If you lose, you can’t go back,” he said. “You either win or go home.”
The Tigers come into the game playing well.
They nearly pulled off a road win at LaGrange last week before thumping Shaw on Friday.
On Monday, Troup reached its high point total for the season in an 83-41 victory over Columbus.
Now the Tigers will look to keep it going against a Shaw team that was the region front-runner before losing its final two regular-season games.
“I know we’ve got a tough one coming up, but we’re going to play like we always play and do what we can,” Billingslea said. “If they believe in what they’re doing and execute, we’ll be all right.”
