Brandon Sutton will represent the Callaway Cavaliers in the state wrestling finals in Macon, and if he keeps wrestling like he has been, he could make a run at a championship.

Sutton, a junior, will compete in the 285-pound division, and he’s coming off a second-place finish in last week’s state sectional.

Sutton will be one of eight wrestlers in his weight class vying for top honors in the state finals in the Macon Coliseum.

Sutton’s first match will be Friday, and if he wins his first two matches, he’ll be in the championship round.

Sutton has been wrestling well of late.

He has won two tournaments, including the area tournament, and he nearly took the top spot in the state sectional in Ringgold.

In a tightly-contested finals match, Sutton finished second, although the loss didn’t cost him anything.

“The whole purpose of the sectional is to just get your seeding for state, and he did that,” Callaway head coach Kurt Napier said.

This week, since Sutton is the only Callaway wrestler still alive, he has gotten plenty of attention.

“We’ve had a one-man practice this week,” Napier said. “I’ve been rolling around with him on the mat a little bit. We’re really just focusing on the fundamentals, making sure he stays in shape. We keep him moving at practice.”

Sutton’s season got off to a late start because he’s also a member of the football team that made it to the second round of the state playoffs.

Sutton went straight from football to wrestling, and after a small adjustment period, he started rolling.

“Once he got into wrestling shape, as the season went along, he started winning some tournaments and having some success,” Napier said.
