Something is abuzz with the Certified Literate Community Program — its 15th annual Corporate/Community Spelling Bee.

This year’s contest is set for Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Callaway Conference Center at West Georgia Technical College, 220 Fort Drive.

Teams of three spellers, sponsored by companies and individuals from across the community, will compete for the ultimate recognition as Spelling Bee champions. Debbie Burdette, executive director of Troup CLCP, encouraged everyone to turnout for “an evening of fun.”

“You don’t have to BEE on a team to have a great time at the spelling bee,” she said.

Jack Morman and Renae Willis will once again serve as “emBEE” and pronouncer respectively. Local educator and entertainer Carol Cain returns in her role as bouncer bee, serenading each team as they leave the stage following their elimination.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for a used book sale with all proceeds to benefit Troup CLCP. Everyone will have a chance to win door prizes contributed by area companies and merchants.

Returning this year is the CLCP word find. Those who complete the puzzle and submit their entry will be eligible for a special door prize at the conclusion of the evening’s activities.

Troup CLCP is continuing to make a difference in our community and education is becoming a priority for everyone, Burdette said.

“Your support will allow us to continue emphasizing the importance of education to everyone across Troup County, from new mothers to senior citizens,” she said of the purpose of the spelling bee. “Come out and cheer for your favorite team but more importantly demonstrate your support for our efforts to eliminate illiteracy in our community.”

Anyone who wants more information on sponsoring a team or donating door prizes may contact Burdette at 706-756-4645 or Debbie.burdette@westgatech.edu.

Troup County CLCP is a collaborative between local business, education, government and community. The CLCP encourages a love of reading as a foundation for lifelong learning and supports those programs with similar goals.

CLCP promotes literacy awareness and programs to assist students in need of basic literacy education. More information is available at www.troupclcp.org.
