Leading up to the Great American Cleanup on April 18, the Daily News will feature winning entries from a recycling essay contest sponsored by Keep Troup Beautiful. The essays below and in the column at far left are from students at West Side Magnet School. More essays will appear Monday. Peyton Knox, a fifth grader at West Side Magnet School, won second place among 22 entries from Kathy Golden’s class for this essay.

The movie, Wall-E, gave its audience a glimpse of what our world could become if we do not start taking better care of it. The movie showed a world overcome with trash. The earth was full of trash and the4 air was unfit to breathe. The people were forced to live in outer space. The movie may have exaggerated a little, but it made me more aware of how important recycling is to our future.

Recycling is very important to our environment. It may not seem like it, but it is. Here are some reasons why it is important.

If American would begin to use materials more than once, we could conserve the earth’s natural resources. For example, recycling paper saves trees and water. Making one ton of paper from recycled waste can save up to 17 trees and uses 50 percent less water.

When we throw away stuff that we could recycle, we make the cost of waste disposal more expensive. Garbage trucks must pay to dump their waste at a landfill. Recycling reduces landfill costs because less waste is dumped into the landfills.

It almost always takes less energy to make a product from recycled materials than it does to make it from new materials.

All recycling means is to make something used into something new! It’s not as complicated as you think. Materials that can be recycled are glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles, and electronics. There are a number of ways to recycle. The three main ways are drop off centers, buy-back centers, and curbside collection.

We can all do our part in keeping our earth beautiful. Not only should we recycle, but we should also try to use recycled products in our everyday life. For example, my mother brings home recycled paper from her office for us to draw on, color, or practice for spelling tests.

We also try to purchase items n stores with the recycled symbol. We buy rechargeable batteries that we can use over and over again. Recycling is easy and can help keep our earth beautiful, the air safe to breathe, and our water clean. Remember the three R’s: reduce, reuse, and recycle.
