Mrs. Louise Nix Smith Cox, 87, of LaGrange passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Hospice LaGrange.

Mrs. Cox was born January 27, 1922 in Randolph County, Alabama, daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Cora Lavonia Benefield Nix. She formerly lived at 160 Poplar Circle for many years. Her property is now the First Tee Golf Course and her home became the golf course club house. Mrs. Cox was a member of Southwest LaGrange Baptist Church, and was a resident of Vernon Woods for the past six years. She was a former resident of South Georgia and had worked as a farmer.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph A. ‘Butch’ and Dianne Smith of Columbus; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Danny Watson of Pine Mountain; one step-daughter and two step-sons; five grandchildren, Todd Cripe, Emily (Ed) Sutherland, and Paula Smith all of Columbus, Brandy Smith of Houston, TX, and Wendy Smith of Columbus; two great-grandchildren, Avery Sutherland and Addison Sutherland both of Columbus; one step-granddaughter and two step-great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband Mr. W. G. ‘Doll’ Cox Jr. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Cora B. Benefield, Mary Nix and Lucille Morman.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 Tuesday at the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel. The Vernon Woods staff will serve as honorary pallbearers. Interment will be at Shadowlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 1:00 until 2:00 before the service.

Flowers will be accepted, or contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Cox to Southwest LaGrange Baptist Church, 1305 Washington Street, LaGrange, GA 30240, or Hospice LaGrange, 1510 Vernon Road, LaGrange, GA 30240
