An Atlanta man remained on the loose today after escaping from the Troup County Public Work Camp on Sam Walker Drive.

Bembry Letterence, 31, was doing yard work in front of the work camp just after noon Monday when a late-model white Buick pulled up to the building. Letterence got in the car and left, said Warden Dexter Wells.

Wells said Letterence, serving a two-year sentence from Fulton County for possession of cocaine and possession of firearm by a felon, was on a minimum-security detail in front of the camp. His escape was discovered within 15 minutes of his departure during a routine check, Wells said.

Letterence, who is 5-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs 150 pounds, has a tattoo of the name “Erica” on his upper right arm.

Wells said the incident has been turned over to the statewide fugitive squad.

Something about this article makes me want to look away from what I'm reading, and come back to it later to make sure I didn't read it wrong.
