Troup County 911 supervisor Melissa Wortham said standing water on roads as well as tree limbs and debris were reported in multiple areas.
At least one collision likely is weather-related. Six cars were involved in a crash at West Point Road and Long Cane Road about 7:45 a.m., blocking both lanes of West Point Road. One minor injury was reported, but standing water and tree limbs were reported on the road.
Laney Ayres, owner of Magic Touch Salon at 205 Byron Hurst St., said employees arrived at work to find it had flooded.
“There’s about 4 inches of muddy water covering all the floors of the building,” she said.
The building typically floods when it rains and it needs a new sealer on the walls, she said, calling today’s flooding worse than usual.
“We have been shop vacuuming water since 8 this morning,” Ayres said at 9 a.m. “So far, we have removed about 36 gallons of water.”
The State Patrol responded to a report of a car off the road on Interstate 85 north of LaGrange about 7:15 a.m., but no details were available.
A pre-dawn storm led to reports of hail on New Hutchinson Mill Road shortly before 6 a.m. A larger storm was reported at 6:25 a.m. about 12 miles west of LaGrange moving at 40 mph. The east-moving storm swept out of the county about 7 a.m.
There’s a 60 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms this afternoon and some of those storms could be severe, forecasters said. Temperatures today and Friday should be in the mid-60s witih dry conditions returning Friday.
The National Weather Service placed Georgia under a high-risk forecast, and meteorologists warned that today could be a rough one.
A “high risk” warning means the potential exits for powerful storms, tornadoes, large hail, heavy rainfall and damaging winds.
Forecasters predict the severe weather will track over parts of north and central Georgia. The bulk of the storms could last through the afternoon and evening and pose a significant threat to safety.
