A would-be armed robber left a local convenience store empty-handed Thursday morning, after a female employee told him police were on the way.

The man, dressed in a black, pulled-down hooded jacket and brandishing a handgun, stormed into PCA Food Store at 1200 Hogansville Road about 9:40 a.m. and demanded money from the cashier. She refused and prevented him from walking behind the front counter by standing in his way, police said.

The clerk then pushed a silent alarm and told the man that police were about to arrive.

He fled in a silver-colored car, failing to steal anything.

Police said this morning they have no leads or suspects.

Public indecency

Troup County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a woman standing with pants pulled down in the front entrance of Long Cane Baptist Church at 5922 West Point Road Wednesday afternoon. The woman said she was taking her son to register for classes at West Georgia Technical College but had to stop to urinate. Deputies originally suspected alcohol as the cause, but said the woman wasn’t intoxicated and charged her with public indecency.

Burglaries, thefts

A thief stole several 14-carat gold necklaces, some antique coins and a jewelry box containing numerous items for a total value of $4,000 from a residence in the first block of Deerwood Drive Thursday morning.

Some video game equipment valued at nearly $1,200 were stolen from a residence in the 1000 block of Houston Street. Items stolen included an X-Box 360, two wireless controllers and 10 games.

A thief damaged the front window of a car stranded on the side of the road in the 100 block of Ragland Street and stole a Pioneer stereo system valued at $300. The owner of the vehicle had left it there for nearly three hours because of mechanical problems that occurred while he was driving. The value of the window was estimated at $400.

A thief broke into a Mercury Cougar at the Stay Lodge at 1510 Whitesville St., and stole a stereo system valued at $350.

Vandalism

A vandal caused more than $1,000 of damage to truck parked at Chalk-It-Up at 1872 Vernon St. The damage included deep scratches, dents and shattered windows.
