A former LaGrange High School student attending Auburn University as a freshman was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Auburn, Ala.

Brandon Maluff, 19, of Auburn was a passenger in a Jeep Wrangler that collided with a Ford SUV near the university’s campus Thursday night.

The driver, a 19-year-old man from Auburn, was taken to East Alabama Medical Center for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries, Auburn police said. The other driver was uninjured.

Maluff attended LaGrange High as a freshman in 2005 and transferred to Auburn High School in 2006.

After graduating from high school in 2008, Maluff enrolled as a pre-med student in the College of Science and Math at Auburn, said Jim Hardin, a senior program adviser.

“It’s just a real tragedy,” Hardin said. “He was doing well in some tough biology courses and was on a really good path to success.”

While living in LaGrange, Maluff was a member of First Baptist Church on the Square.

“It’s a tragedy to lose anyone in this manner,” said Pat Tyndall, a pastor’s assistant at the church. “He was a sweet boy with an infectious smile and was from a very nice family.”

Maluff is the son of Lisa McNeil Skelton and the stepson of Andy Skelton, who live in Auburn. His grandparents are Glenda and Jim McNeil of LaGrange.

O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered; Accept our prayers on behalf of the soul of thy servant departed, and grant Brandon an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of thy saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
