Staff and wire reports

Just when we thought it was time for warm weather, mother nature does an about face.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City say snow showers are likely across portions of far north Georgia late Monday night. Accumulations of around a half-inch are possible in the northeast Georgia mountains.

Troup County will miss the snow, but will take part in the cold snap and landscapers urged protection for outdoor plants this week to keep them from freezing.

Residents here awoke to temperatures in the 40s with a high of just 48 predicted today and 47 on Tuesday. Lows will be in the 30s tonight and upper 20s Tuesday night before temperatures rebound to 65 by Wednesday and 70 by late week, with lows in the upper 40s.

A wind advisory was active today until 2 a.m. Tuesday. Winds behind the cold front that swept through Sunday were expected between 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph. Forecasters warned some trees, weakend by rain, could blow over.

There’s also a chance of rain and snow showers as far south as Atlanta and Athens toward Tuesday morning.

The late cold snap means subfreezing temperatures will prompt farmers and gardeners to protect sensitive vegetation.

Meanwhile, forecasters have issued a wind advisory for much of central and north Georgia.
