The Callaway girls’ tennis team added another chapter to its storybook season Thursday afternoon.
Facing Heard County in the championship round of the Region 5-AA tournament, the Lady Cavs walked away with a 3-1 victory to secure the title.
It was the first region championship in the history of Callaway tennis.
“They made history, and they’re excited about that,” Callaway head coach Kareem Douhne said.
Crystal Robinson won at No. 2 singles, and Erin Anderson won at No. 3 singles for Callaway.
“They both played lights out,” Douhne said.
At No. 2 doubles, Kaitlyn Gilbert and Kasey Barintine also won, giving Callaway the three victories needed to win.
Callaway’s No. 1 doubles team of Rachel Williams and Morgan Sikes was up 3-2 in the third set when the match was called.
At No. 1 singles, Jill Cook fell just short.
Earlier in the week in the semifinals against Lamar County, the script was the same, with Robinson, Anderson, and Gilbert and Barintine winning.
“When pressed, they always responded,” Douhne said.
Callaway will host Lovett on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. in the first round of the Class AA state tournament.
Lovett is one of the state’s elite teams, and it’ll be a tough matchup for the Lady Cavs.
“We’ll do what we can and see what happens,” Douhne said.
