An exceptional season came to an end for the Callaway girls’ tennis team Tuesday.

Facing a powerful Lovett team in the first round of the Class AA state tennis tournament, the Lady Cavs fell 5-0.

Head coach Kareem Douhne was proud of the way his players fought against an extremely talented team.

“They were tough, as we knew they would be,” Douhne said. “But the girls played with confidence. They didn’t go out there scared to death of them. They hung in there, toe-to-toe.”

The Lady Cavs didn’t win any matches or sets, but Douhne said Crystal Robinson gave her opponent at No. 2 singles all she could handle.

“She really pushed that girl,” Douhne said. “She was running down balls, making that girl work.”

Douhne also said the No. 1 doubles match involving Callaway’s Rachel Williams and Morgan Sikes went to a tiebreaker in the first set.

“They all went out there fearless and tried their best,” Douhne said.

Jill Cook played at No. 1 singles, and Erin Anderson was the No. 3 singles player.

Kaitlyn Gilbert and Kasey Barintine played at No. 2 doubles.

The loss capped a remarkable season for the Lady Cavaliers, who won the first region championship in the history of the program.

“They made history, and they’re excited about that,” Douhne said.
