A new restaurant at Highland Marina Resort wants to avoid any run-ins with neighbors over loud music.

Lakeside Grill has applied for an entertainment license that got a first reading at Tuesday’s Troup County Commission meeting. A vote is scheduled for May 5.

The board suspended the marina’s entertainment license in 2007 because of complaints about the volume of live bands on the deck of what was then Captain Ron’s restaurant. The owners installed sound-absorbing material, but the complaints didn’t go away.

Tulla White then leased the space for a restaurant called 641 At The Marina, but it closed and Lakeside Grill took over the lease about a month ago.

“We have to know what assurances you have that we won’t have the same trouble we had before Tulla White,” Commissioner Ken Smith said.

Lakeside Grill owners Kimberly Thomas and Michael Chancey said they’re well aware of the former controversy.

Thomas said they’ll have a sound curtain and decibel meter to control the volume and there’s won’t be any music after midnight. More than 200 people have signed a petition in favor of having entertainment, she said.

It will be “mostly acoustical sets,” Chancey added. “We’ll try to stay away from high-amplified stuff.”

They agreed with Commission Chairman Ricky Wolfe’s suggestion to get input from residents in the vicinity.

“It will be extremely helpful to us and to you in the long term for the community to get together,” Wolfe said.

Also Tuesday, the board approved a pension plan change that will allow “about three or four” employees to retire early if their positions can be consolidated into others.

Because of the slow economy, commissioners are trying to cut about $2 million from next year’s budget to avoid increasing the property tax rate. Personnel costs make up 68 percent of the spending plan.

In another matter, the board approved Terry Lewis’ application to locate a manufactured home at 76 Plumtree Drive to replace a site-built home that burned.

The surprising thing to me is that someone would consider trying to resurrect the idea of having a restaurant out at the marina for the umpteenth time. I'm sure a restaurant does a bang up business out there from now until probably mid October, but after that it's lights out. Dead out there in the late fall and winter.
