A LaGrange man was sentenced Tuesday for trying to rob a man who was shot during the crime.

Avery Rashad Young, 19, received 12 months in prison and four years’ probation after he pleaded guilty in Troup Superior Court to charges of attempted armed robbery, hindering the punishment of a criminal, criminal trespass and giving a false name to law enforcement officers.

Co-defendant Joevian Seantavious Brooks, 17, of LaGrange was sentenced last month to eight years prison and four years’ probation after he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, wearing a mask to conceal his identity and criminal trespass.

Police said the victim, Kevin Lukemire, 41, was shot in the throat Oct. 11 at Benjamin Harvey Hill Homes, but was able to drive away and police found him in his truck on the Morgan Street bridge. He was flown by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center and has made a complete recovery, police said.

A 16-year-old, who cannot be identified because of his age, also was arrested in the case and faced charges in Juvenile Court.
