LaGrange police accused a man of firing a pistol in the air in the 800 block of Park Avenue about 8:30 a.m. Friday. Two men were arrested in a search that lasted until 4 p.m., but their names were not available.

One of the men was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and both face charges of reckless conduct, police said. The gunman shot the pistol in the front yard of a residence and “in the vicinity of the other man,” but not at him. A search warrant was issued on the residence and police found the gun.

Wreck victim dies

A Columbus woman involved in an accident in late March on Interstate 185 has died at the University of Alabama Birmingham Medical Center.

Chasity Palmer, 21, was one of two passengers ejected from a vehicle about 5:50 a.m. March 29. Palmer and the other passenger, Rose Brown, 30, of Columbus were airlifted to Birmingham with multiple injuries, a hospital spokesman said. She died Thursday night. Brown later was released.

The driver, Kelly Thompson, 19, of Phenix City, Ala., reportedly fell asleep while in the left lane headed south and lost control of her vehicle. The vehicle struck a median and swerved back and forth on the highway for about 182 feet and ran off the road into a large stump, state troopers said.

After striking the stump, the car flew through the air and rolled twice striking the median once more before stopping on the southbound side of the interstate near the Oak Grove Road overpass about eight miles south of LaGrange.

Palmer and Brown were ejected the first time the car rolled over. Palmer’s head struck the guard rail on the side of the road.

Checks stolen

A resident of the 100 block of Cleveland Drive said a man in a white Chevrolet SUV has stolen three Social Security checks from his mailbox valued at $894 during the last three months. A neighbor of the victim said he saw the man in the SUV take the checks from the mailbox twice.
