A 30-year-old woman who has Georgia’s only confirmed case of swine flu remained in stable condition at West Georgia Medical Center, but “she continues to show signs of improvement,” hospital President Jerry Fulks said today.

The Bowling Green, Ky., woman had recently traveled to Mexico, returned home and then attended a wedding in LaGrange on April 26. She was admitted to the LaGrange hospital with flu-like symptoms the same day.

Health officials said all of her known contacts have been asymptomatic.

The Centers for Disease Control confirmed last Thursday that a sample, normally a nasal swab, from the woman had tested positive for swine flu. Since then, the hospital has forwarded a small number of samples from other patients and they’ve all been negative.

“We’ve worked out a courier system with the CDC and the state lab” and now test results are available sooner, Fulks said.

He said the turnaround time has been reduced from 60-72 hours to 24-30 hours.
