James L. Givins of Gardner Newman Middle School was a post gold winner in the annual VFW essay contest.
To this day I still feel my heart race as it did when I walked the grounds of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. The scene took my breath away. The first thing that caught my eye was an engraving that read, “Here we mark the price of freedom”. I think for the first time I understood what those words meant. We sat on the steps and admired the memorial together as a family and as proud Americans. I truly realized the sacrifices made by so many men and women to ensure my freedom. The experience forever changed me, and Veteran’s Day has come to mean so much more.
Today, there are about 25 million living veterans. It is important to recognize these veterans as true American heroes and honor them for their service, courage and sacrifice to our country. How many of us can imagine leaving our families for years at a time to fight in a war? These veterans served proudly to protect our freedom. Their courage to serve our country has helped to shape our lives today. President George W. Bush stated in 2001, “All veterans are examples of service and citizenship for every American to remember and to follow.” I understand now that our freedom is not free and never will be.
As a veteran, my grandfather has shared many stories with me. He served his country and did so proudly without a selfish thought. His thoughts were only about making a better world for generations to come. Our veterans set aside their lives and dreams to make my life better. To honor them and to show appreciation for their sacrifice, we should take advantage of the many opportunities they have given us. As President George W. bush stated, “Americans should always honor our veterans. At this moment, we especially need the example of their character. And we need a new generation to set examples of its own, examples in service and sacrifice and courage. Thee veterans have shaped our history, and with their values, your generation will help guide our future.”
As November 11 approaches, I look forward to honoring our veterans who sacrificed so much for our country. As our country faces many challenges, we have a great Nation of veterans who have led by example. It is now my generation’s turn to continue this great legacy.
