Memorial Day celebrations on Monday will include a special open house at the Legacy Museum on Main to highlight the World War II exhibit.

The museum will be open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. A guest DJ, Fade to Black Productions of Columbus, will play many of the finest World War II-era songs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Also from 4 to 7 p.m., Carol Cain will perform as “Rosie the Riveter” and Bill Black will present readings from war-era diaries and letters. Three World War II era vehicles: one jeep, a truck and a cargo and personnel truck which was sometimes used to transport troops, will be parked in front of the museum during the open house.

Local veterans’ groups will hold Memorial Day services at 11 a.m. Monday at Shadowlawn Cemetery on New Franklin Road.

The ceremony will be highlighted by the National Anthem and “God Bless America,” sung by Loren Pinkerman, director of the Sons of Lafayette Male Chorus. The Rev. Tony Dean of Loyd Presbyerian Church, a Navy Captain and chaplain, will be the guest speaker.

After the service at Shadowlawn, a contingent of veterans will head to Restlawn Memory Gardens on Mooty Bridge Road to place a wreath on the grave of Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sgt. Hammett L. Bowen, Jr.

The public is invited to help the veterans put flags on the graves of veterans at Shadowlawn at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The public can come out again at 10 a.m. Tuesday to help pick up flags.

American Legion Post 580 will manage the placing of flags at Southview Cemetery and the local Civil Air Patrol squadron will assist in putting the flags out at Restlawn Cemetery.

American Legion Post 152 in Hogansville will hold its own Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at Calvin Hipp Veterans’ Memorial Park on East Main Street. In the case of rain, the ceremony will be moved to Hogansville First United Methodist Church, directly across the street from the park.
