A severe storm that moved through Troup County on Monday afternoon brought buckets of rain, hail, lightning and downed trees and power lines.

The storm formed south of the area and came up through Harris County into LaGrange, prompting a severe thunderstorm warning until 5:15 p.m. Penny- to nickel-sized hail was reported for several minutes.

Troup 911 dispatchers said damage was confined mostly to the city of LaGrange, and mostly to the city’s older trees. A tree fell on a porch and two vehicles in the 300 block of Park Avenue, but no one was injured.

An oak tree split and fell on a house in the 1200 block of Third Avenue, damaging the roof and totaling a Honda Civic. And a tree on Carver Street fell onto a porch.

On Houston Street, the storm caused a large tree to topple onto power lines and a car that was parked along the street. The car sustained heavy damage.

LaGrange utilities director Patrick Bowie said there were scattered problems around the city that kept crews out working on the Memorial Day holiday until 10 Monday night.

“It just took a good number of hours to get everything back up,” he said.

The storm brought about 1.5 inches of rain to downtown LaGrange.

The scattered storms were expected to continue today and Wednesday before tapering off Thursday and Friday. Saturday is expected to be rain-free.
