The Georgia Department of Labor said LaGrange had a rate of 14.5 percent, down from 14.9 percent in March and up from 8.4 percent a year ago.
Troup County’s jobless rate was 12.8 percent in April, up from 12.6 percent in March and 7.0 percent a year ago.
Heard County’s rate was 12.3 percent in April, compared to 13.1 percent in March and 6.7 percent a year ago. Meriwether County had an April rate of 12.8 percent, up from 12.6 and 7.5 percent, respectively.
Georgia’s rate was 9.3 percent in April, up from 9.2 percent in March and February and 5.8 percent a year ago. Georgia remained above the national rate of 8.9 percent for the 18th consecutive month.
The Labor Department said 446,560 Georgians are looking for work, a 60 percent increase from April 2008. Of that number, 167,981 or 37.6 percent are receiving unemployment insurance benefits. The number of payroll jobs in April decreased 197,100, or 4.8 percent, from April 2008 thanks to declines in manufacturing, professional and business services, including temporary employment agencies, as well as trade, transportation and warehousing, and the construction industry.
Job gains totaling 14,200 were recorded in health care and educational services.
