Sports editor Kevin Eckleberry was first-place winner in the sports writing category. His honored entries included a feature on the 50th anniversary of the 1958 state championship LaGrange High Granger football team.
Editor Andrea Lovejoy won three awards, all second places, for humorous columns, serious columns and editorial writing.
Staff writer Sherri Brown had two third-place awards, for humorous columns and religion coverage.
Brown and Lovejoy were lead writers in the paper’s coverage of the Iraq war death and hometown funeral of Sgt. Corey Spates, which received third place in the community service category. Senior writer Joel Martin and former photographer Matt Jones also contributed to the coverage.
Jones won two awards, first place in sports photography for a shot from the Dixie Youth World Series and third in spot news photography for an apartment fire photo.
The newspaper’s lifestyle section, edited by Debby Durrence, won third place.
The paper won two awards, second and third place, for headline writing and took second in education coverage.
The community-focused, magazine-style special section, “Discovering Troup County” took third in special issues.
The awards, announced at the recent Georgia Press Association convention in Jekyll Island, were for work done in 2008.
LaGrange Daily News competes in Division C, with other newspapers of comparable size. The Brunswick Daily News took first place in general excellence in the division, ending the La-Grange newspaper’s run of four straight general excellence awards.
