Dear Editor:

Our present corrupt health care system is run by insurance companies which charge outrageous premiums and skimp on benefits. It is an unfair and unhealthy culture of fraud and abuse. In today’s health care system, the only certainties for most of us are illness, poverty, and death. Each of us is a single illness away from bankruptcy.

The right wing warns that health care reform will lead to socialized medicine, with the government being the single payer for benefits. For once, I hope that the conservatives are right!

Among the many lingering unreasonable fears from the 1950s is the conservative fear of socialism. For the next few months, that fear will be directed toward stopping health care reform. If you want fair and affordable health care as proposed by President Obama, tell your representatives (Congressman Lynn A. Westmoreland Phone: 770 683 2033, Senator Saxby Chambliss Phone: 770 763 9090, Senator Johnny Isakson Phone: 770 661 0999).

Our "vaunted" healthcare system - the "best in the world" - is overrated in my opinion. Some facts back me up that this is NOT the BEST:

Our infant mortality rate is pathetic: among the lowest in industrialized nations.

Our life expectancy is 78 years, and trails Greece, Finland, and Spain.

The WHO (world health organization) ranked the US healthcare system #37 in the world in its 2000 survey (the last one).

Additionally, the #2 cause of personal bankruptcy here in the US is for healthcare.

In 15 years, Medicare/Medicaid in the US will be 8 TIMES larger than social security! The greed and expense of the insurance and pharma industry (my industry) is disgusting and literally killing our population.

Sure, we may have the best specialists and expertise in the world, but we have issues that are meaningful. We need an overhaul.
