By 1 p.m., a crowd estimated at 100 had gathered, and police and State Department of Natural Respurces officials were appealing for quiet sothat the bear, believed to be a male juvenile, would calm down and climb down from the tree in the yard of a vacant home at 303 Johnson St.
A DNR wildlife specialist hopes to use a dart to sedate the bear for transport out of the area.
Bears are not indigenous to Troup County, a DNR official said, but sometimes pass through the area – although they don’t usually come into towns.
