Corey Wright takes a big lick of his ice cream ‘drumstick’ at the conclusion of Wednesday’s summer reading program featuring the book ‘Jungle Drums’ read by ‘Mama Jama,’ Debbie Burdette. About 50 youngsters attend the weekly sessions, sponsored by the Certified Literate Community Program, at Benjamin Harvey Hill Homes community center.

The hot summer days may have you humming a familiar jingle: You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream.
This year, LaGrange Daily News and LaGrange Memorial Library are “screaming” - OK, partnering - to find the best-tasting homemade ice cream in Troup County. If you make fabulous ice cream - or know someone who does - the LDN’s first “It’s a Good Thing” ice cream contest offers a chance to share in a “cool” community event and win great prizes, too.
Here’s the idea. Nothing says summer fun better than a good book and a bowl of homemade ice cream - both are “good things” - so the competition will be held at the library and include members of its teen readers’ club.
The “Good Things” ice cream event will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday and will be judged by “experts” from Scoops, Chick-fil-A and Dairy Queen, as well as three teenagers from A Likely Tale Book Club, who will choose the “teens’ choice” winner.
Here are some rules and guidelines:
Ice cream should be delivered to the library between 4:30 and 5 p.m. June 30. Judging will begin promptly at 5 p.m. Participants may stay during the judging - but that’s not required.
Each entry should include a gallon of Ice cream in a disposable container, packed in ice. Entries may be submitted in the churn; however, the retrieval of the churn is the sole responsibility of its owner. We will be finished with the churns by 6 p.m.
The recipe should be attached to the container, and must include the name and contact information of the entrant. Judging will be done blind, that is the judges
Winners and their recipes will be featured in the July 4-5 edition of the Daily News. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and teens’ choice winners.
