Jay Anderson, head coach of the Troup National 9-10 all-star team called it a “typical Jake Farrar” kind of performance.
All Farrar did during Sunday’s 8-1 victory over Troup American was throw a six-inning complete game, and deliver a two-run home run that capped a seven-run second inning.
The victory moved Troup National, which plays again today at 7:30 p.m., to 2-0 in the tournament.
Troup National is in great shape, especially with some of its best pitchers yet to see any tournament action.
“We have lots of pitching,” Anderson said. “We still have what I consider three of our best four pitchers who haven’t thrown. You have to have deep pitching in these tournaments.”
Troup American, meanwhile, stands at 1-1 in the tournament, and it will take on Manchester at 6 p.m. today in an elimination game.
The top-two finishers in the seven-team tournament advance to the state tournament.
Troup American was coming off a marathon performance against Hogansville the day before.
In a game that went eight innings and lasted four hours, Troup American won 24-14.
Hogansville, meanwhile, was eliminated when it lost to Pike County National 15-10 on Sunday in a game that was delayed nearly two hours because or rain.
On Sunday, Troup American stood toe-to-toe with Troup National, but it was done in by one poor inning.
Troup American coach Perry Prather, who felt the seven-run rally was instigated by a poor call at first base, was proud of his team’s effort.
“We played them solid. I believe they know we can play,” Prather said. “I think we still have a shot (at the tournament title). We’ll be there at the end. We want another shot at them.”
Troup National did most of its damage in the second.
After Willis Kemp walked with the bases loaded for the game’s first run, Ben Anderson’s two-run single gave Troup National a 3-0 lead.
Farrar, a left-handed batter, capped the rally with his two-run homer.
Farrar made sure the lead would stand up by pitching six solid innings.
Troup American’s lone run came in the fifth, with Trevor Norris doubling, and Colson Blackburn following with an RBI single.
Prather said pitchers Seth Prather and Cortney Laye each did a solid job on the mound, with Laye giving up just one run after entering the game in relief with two outs in the second inning.
Troup American was one day removed from a game that seemed like it would never end.
The game was tied 11-11 through seven innings, and Troup American scored 13 runs in the top of the eighth to build a 14-11 lead.
Hogansville pushed three runs across in the bottom of the inning, but that wasn’t nearly enough.
David Sweat pitched the final three innings for Troup American to get the win.
“That was the wildest game I’ve ever been involved with in my life,” Prather said. “Everyone was exhausted.”
Prather said he was proud of his players for making just two errors, and despite giving up a lot of runs, Troup’s pitchers had 14 strikeouts.
Troup National, meanwhile, beat Pike County National 18-0 on Saturday.
That victory was highlighted by Noah Hammett’s first home run during a game.
“He’d been hitting them left and right in practice,” Anderson said.
Champ Willis and Amad Ogletree each had two hits, Farrer had an RBI double, and Ben Anderson had a triple.
Austin Gordon started and was the winning pitcher, and Kemp also pitched.
