More gambling suspects surrender

Three people accused of operating commercial gambling machines turned themselves in to Troup County Jail on Monday.

Muhammad Saleem, 43, of Boston Drive, Brandi Cummings, 25, of West Meadoway Drive and Lesia Jacobs, 33, of New Hutchinson Mill Road were charged with commercial gambling.

Saleem owns the Happy Stop at 600 New Franklin Road, where Cummings was employed. Jacobs was employed at Pony Express at 1891 West Point Road. The arrests followed simultaneous raids of six convenience stores in LaGrange and Hogansville on July 1 in which sheriff’s deputies seized about 45 video poker machines and $64,000.

Five other suspects turned themselves in last week.

Pedestrian struck by car

A homeless man was hospitalized after he was struck by a car while crossing the street near Speedy Serve Convenience Store at 201 Whitesville St.

Walter Bowen, 72, was listed in stable condition this morning at Columbus Medical Center.

Police gave this account: Bowen was crossing Whitesville Street on Sunday night when a Ford truck struck him, knocking him unconscious. The driver of the truck said he had a green light at the intersection of Hamilton Road and Whites-ville Street and proceeded when Bowen crossed in front of his vehicle on his left side. Bowen appeared to be intoxicated and suffered a cut on his head, a hematoma on one of his eyes and a broken wrist. Bowen appeared to be at fault but wasn’t cited.

Restaurant burglarized

The owner of China Garden Restaurant at 1016 Hogansville Road said a thief damaged the rear door of his business and stole money from a cash register. The kitchen area of the restaurant was ransacked, but nothing else was stolen, police said.

Burglaries, thefts

— An estimated $2,100 was taken in a burglary in the 3200 block of Mountville-Hogansville Road.

— A 2004 Suzuki dirt bike valued at $2,400 was stolen from Parkway Mitsubishi at 1327 Lafayette Parkway.

— A Diverse Power em-ployee said a resident in the 100 block of Robertson Road was bypassing the power meter and stealing an undetermined amount of electricity. A technician disabled the unit.

— A pressure washer valued at $1,300 was stolen from a residence in the 4500 block of New Franklin Road.

— A resident the 100 block of Mallory Drive said a thief entered her home and took several items.

— A resident of the 1200 block of Hogansville Road said a thief stole his 1981 Chevrolet Caprice.

— A thief stole a stereo system and a debit card from a car in the 600 block of Wilburn Avenue.

Arrests

— A 31-year-old LaGrange woman became irate in a convenience store because she couldn’t buy alcohol on Sunday. Sheriff’s deputies responded to Shell Mart at 2750 Roanoke Road and arrested the woman after learning she had an outstanding warrant for probation violation.

— Michael Ford, 18, of Ridley Avenue was arrested after he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home in the 600 block of Arthur Street on Saturday. Police said he assaulted her, interfered with a 911 call and stole her cell phone. He was charged with robbery, aggravated assault and burglary.

Child molestation

LaGrange police accused a 14-year-old boy of molesting a 9-year-old girl Monday night. He was charged with child molestation, sexual battery and false imprisonment.

Vandalism

— A resident of the 100 block of Ware’s Cross Road said a vandal cut several hoses on the engine of his personal watercraft.

— An employee of LaGrange Food Mart said a vandal damaged the front glass door of the business at 404 Hamilton Road.

Damage

Part of an old rock wall was knocked down, apparently by a vehicle, at Paul French and Partners at 500 Gabbettville Road.
