They were hot, tired, and trailing by three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Troup County 13-14-year-old all-stars were not beaten, though.

Troup rallied for four runs in the ninth to clip Columbia County 7-6 in the opening game of the Dixie Boys Baseball state tournament at the Harris Baseball Complex.

Jack Bradford walked with the bases loaded to bring in Zak Murphy with the winning run.

Troup plays again at 7 p.m. today.

“The guys just hung in there,” Troup head coach John Alise said. “That was special.”

Josh Alise and Brandon Butts started the ninth-inning rally with back-to-back singles, and John Sweat walked to load the bases.

Zak Murphy’s RBI single brought in one run, and Kane Keith followed with an infield single to bring Troup within a run.

Sweat scored the tying run on a wild pitch, and after Nick O’Berry was intentionally walked, Bradford took ball four on a 3-1 count to plate the winning run.

Trailing 1-0 early, Troup tied it on a base hit by O’Berry.

Troup then took a 3-1 lead in the fifth, with Sweat providing the big blow with an RBI triple.

Columbia County rallied to tie it at 3-3 in the seventh, though, and it took the lead with three runs in the top of the ninth.

Kane Keith pitched six solid innings for Troup, giving up just one unearned run in the first inning.

Chase Smith, Cord Carson and Nick O’Berry went the rest of the way, with O’Berry getting the victory.
