Troup County is one victory away from a state championship.
The Troup 13-year-old all-star team, after posting two convincing wins in the Junior Dixie Boys state tournament in Covington, will play Newton County at 6 p.m. today with the state title on the line.
Newton County has one loss in the tournament, so it would have to beat Troup twice to take the top spot.
If Newton County wins today, a deciding game would be played Wednesday.
Troup obviously would prefer to finish things off today, and if it keeps playing like it has, there’s a good chance that will happen.
“They’re playing so solid right now,” Troup coach Andy Buchanan said. “We’re looking forward to (today).”
Troup and Newton County have played once already, and it was a mismatch.
With 11 different players collecting hits, and Caleb Buchanan and Dustin Vaught getting it done on the mound, Troup overwhelmed Newton County 11-2 on Sunday.
Troup opened its stay in the tournament with an 11-1 victory over Whitfield County.
“The team is playing outstanding,” Buchanan said.
If Troup wins today, it will advance to the Dixie World Series in Enterprise, Ala. on Aug. 1.
Troup is trying to win the Junior Dixie Boys state tournament for the second straight year.
