If the economy is strong in 2012, then no Republican can beat Obama. The primary reason Senator McCain lost the election in 2008 is that the economy was in a deep recession. When that happens, the party in charge will be blamed for the economic debacle.
Some people sincerely believe that Governor Palin should be the presidential nominee. They cite her charisma and charm as her primary strengths. Yes, the governor does have the ability to attract followers. However, to be candid, she just doesn’t have the administrative ability. Being governor of Alaska does not prepare a person to be president of the United States.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is often mentioned as a prime presidential candidate. No one can question his experience and intellect. He is by far the most intellectual leader of the Republican Party. But intelligence alone will not make you president. Unfortunately, Gingrich has a lot of skeletons in his closet.
Radio personality Rush Limbaugh definitely has a following among Republicans. That following, however, represents only twenty-five percent of the electorate. It is obvious that he cannot win the presidency. Neither conservative Democrats nor independents are going to vote for Rush.
Former President Reagan was successful because he was able to attract non-Republicans. If a person wants to win in 2012, he needs to have a broad appeal. That’s just the way it is.
I personally hope that the Republican Party will choose Governor Mitt Romney as their 2012 presidential nominee. If the economy is not doing well, he has the best chance of beating President Obama.
Some people do not like Romney because he is a Mormon. Although I do not agree with Mormon doctrine, I am convinced that they are moral, patriotic people. I certainly do not hold that against the governor. Yes, I could vote for Mitt Romney.
What I like most about Romney is that he has managerial skills. We need someone who can manage the economy and, in a business-like manner, deal with other governments. Romney has the expertise and experience to do that.
To his credit, he was a successful governor of Massachusetts. While there he was effectively able to work with Democrats, Republicans, and independents. The man is a self-made millionaire who used his wits to succeed in making and keeping money.
Today he is independently wealthy. Here is a person who has proven that he knows how to manage money.
Our nation is $11 trillion in debt. Someone needs to help us cut this staggering amount considerably. Romney is such a man. I hope the national Republicans will agree with me.
