Mr. Jessie James ‘Big Daddy’ Spence Sr. of 34 Barnard Avenue passed away Thursday at Twin Fountains Nursing Home.

Mr. Spence, a native of LaFayette, Ala., was born October 22, 1931 and was the son of Albert Robert and Cenus Spence. For over 30 years, Mr. Spence worked as a dump truck driver for many construction companies in the region. He married Mary Magalene McCullough on November 26, 1974. He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and attended True Holiness Church in LaGrange. He was respected in his home and community. He was loved so much that he was known as ‘Big Daddy’ at the Commerce Avenue ‘McDonald’s’ restaurant. He was a gentleman and had a great sense of humor.

Survivors include his loving wife, Mary Magalene Spence; six children, Willie James Spence, LaFayette, Ala., Annie Pearl Spence, LaGrange, Betty Mae Palmer, Atlanta, Lanan Dudley (Rodney), LaGrange, Jessie James Spence Jr. (Donna), Dumfries, Va., Jeremiah Robert Spence (Nakeisha), LaGrange; extended family, Gina and Sandra McCullough; twenty grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; two aunts, Emma and Nadine Spence; many nieces, nephews; grandmother-in-law, Rosie Mae Flakes; mother-in-law, Mary Helen McCullough; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Betty Jean Gooden (John), Martha Russell, Maggie Youson, Teresa McCullough, Henry McCullough Jr. and Leroy McCullough and many beloved friends.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 3:00 PM at the True Gospel Deliverance Church on Highway 100. Elder John Poythress III will officiate.Burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery.

The family will be at their home and will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 7 until 8.

Lakes-Dunson-Robertson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
