Troup County sheriff’s officers raided two more stores Tuesday for having video gambling machines, which are illegal in Georgia.

Sheriff’s Capt. William Grizzard said 12 machines and $6,182 cash were seized at Grasshopper convenience store at 7095 West Point Road, and 15 machines and $1,300 were seized from Zoots variety store at 2001 West Lukken Industrial Drive.

“If there are video gambling machines in Troup County, they’ll be taken out,” Grizzard said today.

Warrants for commercial gambling were issued against Zoots owner Alexander Billy Rider, 58, of Salem, Ala., who turned himself in, and George Joseph and Mathew Kochumman, both of Cataula, the owner and cashier at Grasshopper.

Grizzard said an undercover agent was paid cash at both stores for points ac-crued on the video machines.

On July 1, sheriff’s officers seize 45 gambling machines and about $64,000 from six stores in LaGrange and Hogansville during simultaneous raids. Ten arrests were made in that operation, which came after people complained that their spouses were gambling away their paychecks.

“We’ve had men call up saying their wives were spending their retirement because of their addiction to gambling,” Grizzard said.

Assault

A man told sheriff’s deputies that his older brother came to his residence on Indian Bend Drive and hit him twice in the head with a baseball bat, then tried to run over him with a vehicle. The victim was advised of warrant procedures.

Burglaries

— A woman evicted the tenant of her rental house in the first block of John Harris Road, then returned to the property Tuesday and discovered a burglary of the storage barn. A deep freezer, and washer and dryer were stolen.

— A burglar stole a window air-conditioning unit from each of two houses owned by the same woman in the first block of Wilcox Road. They were valued at $275.

Vandalism

A resident of the 400 block of Hampton Green Drive was the target of vandals who scratched the sides and hood of her Nissan Maxima, and left a big dent in the rear passenger side door.

- It is the policy of LaGrange Daily News to print the names of people charged with felonies.
