Two youths charged after wheelchair joyride

Two people were charged with burglary after allegedly breaking into a house in the 1400 block of Park Avenue and taking a power wheelchair on a joyride about 4 p.m. Monday.

Police said Jeremy Tenney, 19, and a 15-year-old were seen riding the $7,000 wheelchair belonging to a 90-year-old Florence Hand Home resident. The back door of the house was broken in.

Officers confronted the two at a residence near the incident, where they were charged.

Hit-and-run driver hits patrol car

A black Dodge Durango involved in a hit-and-run in Hogansville had another run-in with a Troup County deputy about 5:30 p.m. Monday near the Shell Mart on Upper Big Springs Road.

After verifying the vehicle’s license plate through E-911, the deputy followed the driver into a parking place of the gas station. The man then put the vehicle in reverse, backing into the deputy’s patrol car.

The driver was secured with handcuffs and later charged with driving under the influence.

Vandalism

— An employee of Splash Car Wash at 101 S. Dawson St. said a would-be thief tried to take the token dispenser off a vending machine at the business, causing about $3,000 damage.

— A vandal used rocks to break some of the taillights and windows of a city of LaGrange Bobcat construction vehicle that was left overnight near Timothy Street. Dam age was estimated as $150.

Burglaries, thefts

— Several pieces of yard equipment valued at $3,450 were taken from a residence in the 100 block of Chipley-Mountville Road.

— About $290 worth of clothes and $135 of miscellaneous items were taken from a residence in the first block of Habersham Drive.

— A Murphy Avenue resident told police someone took his wife’s purse, emptied out the contents and took $150.

— A thief broke into a vacuum system of Sunny Land Car Wash at 2288 West Point Road and took about $75 worth of quarters. Damage to the system was estimated at $300.

Fire

A fire attributed to unattended cooking caused an estimated $30,000 damage to a new residence at 105 Berry Hill St.

The fire, reported about 2 p.m. Monday, was confined to the second floor where the kitchen was located.

The unidentified owner was not home at the time. Her grandmother, Cathy McCray, and two teenagers escaped injury.
