Mr. Burke was born November 7, 1941 in LaGrange, son of the late Riley and Frankie Burke. He attended LaGrange High School and went on to serve 4 years in the U.S. Navy. He attended LaGrange College and after graduation worked for the LaGrange Daily News for 17 years. He owned the Hogansville Herald before moving to Manchester to take over the paper there. Mr. Burke has lived the last 28 years in Manchester before moving back to LaGrange recently. He was employed at the Georgia Public Safety Center in Forsyth for 22 years before retiring earlier this year. Mr. Burke enjoyed photography, train rides, and collectibles.
His memory will be cherished by his wife Dolores ‘Dee’ Burke; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Pamela Burke and Mark and Bonita Burke; all of LaGrange; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Sandy Burke of LaGrange; a brother-in-law, Bobbie and Maria DeLeon of LaGrange, and Donnie and Hillary DeLeon of San Francisco, CA; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel with Rev. Frank Sledge officiating. Burial will follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
