Two people were taken to West Georgia Medical Center after their Ford F-150 was struck by a log truck about 7:40 a.m. Monday at the intersection of New Franklin and Waugh roads.

The Georgia State Patrol said the driver of the Alabama-licensed Ford truck paused at the Waugh Road stop sign before pulling in front of the log truck traveling north on New Franklin Road.

The driver of the log truck, an employee of Wright Timber LLC in LaGrange, tried unsuccessfully to stop and get out of the Ford truck’s path.

The two people in the Ford truck, a man and his grandson, were hauling yard equipment in a trailer behind the vehicle, leaving various tools scattered in the road after the wreck.

Onlookers said the two in the Ford didn’t look badly injured. The driver’s airbag deployed, but not one where his grandson was sitting.

The driver of the log truck wasn’t injured.

The names of those involved were unavailable.

Traffic was snarled as crews worked to clear the wreckage.

I travel though that intersection every day on my way to and from work. That area is extremely dangerous. When one tries to turn left from Waugh Road, the traffic must be cleared for a very long distance before pulling out. This is because the oncoming cars are going at a tremendous rate of speed. I am sure some are going at least 60 or 70 mph. Maybe there should be a better police presence or a flashing light to warn the cars on New Franklin Road to slow down. I am not sure; but I know, something should be done before more injuries and fatalities happen.

Not sure which onlookers were asked, but we were there from the time it happened until they were taken to the hospital and they did look badly injured.
