West Point City Council plans to take its time hiring a new police chief

David Kerr, who has been police chief in West Point for 21 years, announced in June his plans to retire at the end of the year.

Before the city begins advertising for the job, City Manager Ed Moon is looking into whether it would be more beneficial to have a chief of public safety over both fire and police - like LaGrange - or hire another chief.

Mayor Drew Ferguson IV said it’s very unlikely the city would go with a chief of public safety.

West Point will use the Georgia Chief’s Assessment Center to aid in the hiring process, the mayor said. The center would assist in coming up with a job description and requirements and would advertise for the job.

After the center tests the candidates, the top five will be recommended to council for final interviews and a final choice.

Kerr has said he would stay on as chief until a successor is found.
