The first students at Columbus State University’s West Point campus began classes Monday evening.
Cathy Carlisle, dean of outreach enrollment, said early Monday that 127 students had registered for West Point classes and more were signing up throughout the day.
“We had a goal of 150 (students in West Point), and it looks like we’ll make that goal,” she said.
Classes are being held in a downtown building at 405 E. 8th St. and the campus administration has moved into its permanent headquarters, the former Adcock florist shop at 707 3rd Ave.
Courses are being offered in communications, computer science, criminal justice, business, teacher education, as well as graduate level courses in educational leadership.
Carlisle said the college is considering offering political science classes at the West Point campus.
“It would be along the lines of international policy, something with a global flavor,” she said.
The school is offering its classes at night and on weekends as well as online to accommodate students with full-time jobs. In-state (Georgia) tuition is being offered for Alabama residents of Chambers, Russell and Lee counties.
