The terminal, which hasn’t been upgraded since it was built about 25 years ago, is getting a new roof, handicapped-accessible restrooms, a glass-enclosed addition to give employees a better view of the primary runway and fuel farm, and a portico where people can be dropped off and picked up.
“”We’re sprucing up the building and making it … compliant” with the Americans with Disabilities Act, said airport manager Hope Macaluso.
The staff has been working in a modular building since April, when Daniel Construction Co. in LaGrange started the project, which was financed by the county government, Troup County Airport Authority and a $100,000 grant from the Callaway Foundation.
“We hope to be moved back in by the end of September,” Macaluso said.
The county road department will do paving for the portico, and inmates are doing some of the interior renovations.
Authority Chairman Charlie Browne said he’s been asked about the wisdom of such a project during a recession, but “we’ve been planning it for several years. It’s just been a matter of getting the funds.”
“It’s a good time to do it with not a lot of people coming and going,” he said. “We also got some great bids because contractors were hungry at the time.”
