Jenny Jack Sun Farms, a chemical-free farm in Pine Mountain, is offering a Community-Supported Agriculture program in LaGrange for the first time. Starting Aug. 29, owners Chris and Jenny Jackson will bring fresh produce to LaGrange CSA members every week through Nov. 21.
Community-Supported Agriculture programs have been in existence around the world since the 1950s. A family, person or group of people commit to supporting a local farm by paying an up-front fee for a growing season, thus becoming a shareholder in the CSA. The fee goes to the farm to support their operations and, in turn, each member receives a weekly harvest of fresh, local produce during the growing season.
For the past two years, Jenny Jack Farms has partnered with other farms to provide CSAs in Atlanta and in Harris County. This fall, they will offer a CSA in LaGrange.
“We’re excited to spread out to our neighbors in LaGrange,” Chris Jackson said. “CSAs are appealing to farmers because we can plan how many people to grow for. It’s a great way to support a small farm. It’s also good for consumers because they get a bag of the best of the best of our farm every week.”
The Jacksons’ farm has two growing seasons for CSAs - spring/summer and summer/fall.
“It’s not for everyone,” Jackson admitted. “A CSA is for someone who enjoys eating fresh local produce and can be flexible and adventurous. Everything we offer are fruits and vegetables that grow well in Georgia. It’s not going to be anything ridiculous.”
The cost for the 13-week season is $325 and each week, members can pick up a bag of fresh produce worth $25 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. On average, the bag of produce will include six to eight different vegetables - whatever is plentiful at Jenny Jack Sun Farms.
“The reason it’s appealing to farmers is that we know how many people to grow for. It’s a great way to support a small farm,” Jackson said. “
Fall produce grown at Jenny Jack Sun Farms include: arugula, beets, beans, broccoli, carrots, cherry tomatoes, collard greens, field peas, kale, kohlrabi, melons, mustard greens, okra, parsley, summer squash, winter squash, sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, turnips and Swiss chard.
