The state legislature this year did away with an $8,000 homestead exemption because of declining revenues, which means most homeowners will pay an additional $237.28.
In West Point and Hogansville, homeowners will get hit with another $78.24 and $63.60, respectively, because the exemption also comes off the city tax digests.
LaGrange doesn’t have a property tax, but operates on utility income and other revenue sources.
People with a $100,000 house and the standard $2,000 exemption will have a total tax bill of $1,127.08 in LaGrange and the unincorporated area, $1,577.60 in West Point and $1,445.08 in Hogansville.
Taxes are due in November.
County Tax Commissioner Gary Wood said he expects to collect a little more than $55 million for the county government and school system, Hogansville, the LaGrange Downtown Development Authority and the state. West Point collects its own taxes.
Meanwhile, Wood said he has an “outstanding” 99.96 percent collection rate for 2008 property taxes and the balance will be collected after a tax sale in October.
