A toilet couldn’t help a man being chased by police.

Police said Toby Payne, 24, of Cherry Valley Drive was being chased on Whitesville Road near Lukken Industrial Boulevard in a white Isuzu Rodeo when he quickly pulled into JR Food Mart at 1616 Whites-ville St., ran into the store and locked himself in the restroom about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers told Payne to open the door and walk out. He did and they arrested him.

Police said they found a small amount of marijuana inside the toilet bowl and a handgun in the toilet tank.

Payne was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm with altered serial numbers, possession of marijuana, obstruction and driving while unlicensed.

Stabbed man faces charges

A man stabbed in the shoulder about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Stay Lodge at 1610 Whitesville St. found himself charged with disorderly conduct afterward.

Police said the man and another man argued while drinking. The first man walked up the stairs to start a fight with the second man, who defended himself with a knife, cutting the first man on the shoulder.

Police decided the second man was acting in self-defense. His alleged as-sailant, who was treated at West Georgia Medical Center, was charged with disorderly conduct.

‘I agree, it’s me’

Troup County sheriff’s deputy Nathan Taylor went to Tyler’s Express on New Franklin Road after a Crime Stoppers tip about a man with four active arrest warrants. Taylor saw a man matching the description, but he denied being the person in question.

Taylor said he asked the man his age and he replied, “60 … uh, 42, 41.” Taylor tried to put him in handcuffs, but the man fled.

“As we reached the opposite side of the building, I was able to successfully deploy my Taser and then took him into custody,” Taylor said “At that time, he told me he was indeed” the man with outstanding warrants for contempt of court and probation violation. He also was charged with obstruction of an officer.

Regarding the incident with a man trying to "hide" a gun and dope in the toilet, I find it a little unfair the way the city of La Grange gets away with things. Isn't JR Food Mart notorious for drug deals and vandalism? The Stay Lodge right next door has high crime rates. I rarely even stop at JR Food Mart because of the amount of "crack heads" and "gangsters" loitering outside. Every time I pull in someone tries to proposition me into buying drugs. So they say the gun, nor the marijuana was found on his person? And what kind of idiot would throw it in the toilet, knowing they would find it? For all we know it could have been there... I thought our constitutional rights stated that we were innocent until proven guilty? I feel like this town picks and chooses who they want to "pick" on. And they don't want to help people that need it. They are to busy worrying about the small things, and once you are in the system they treat you like an animal. This article fails to mention how the La Grange Police call people in and question them over things they couldn't have done. I am so sick and tired of the prejudices of this town. After saying this I am likely to be the next target... but I want to make a step forward and say how unfair they treat people. And the county jail is absolutely filthy, staff is being passed around. The women can not drink the kool-aid because it passes yeast infections. They strip you of all of your undergarments, and give you clothing that is still dirty from the last inmate. So they wonder why Mr. Payne would run???? The visitation, "if" you get one, is awful! You can't hear, and it looks like they never clean it. I can understand someone doing their time if they do something wrong, but don't we at least have rights? Aren't they still human? I see no reason for our town to treat them the way they do. And at such a young age our instincts are to be "scared" of the police. I can only count up 5 officers at the county that try to treat our inmates like they should.
