The Department of Transportation’s three-year plan includes the second phase of the South Loop highway between Whitesville Road and Ro-anoke Road, resurfacing of state routes, streetscape projects in Ho-gansville and West Point, and runway repair and tree-removal projects at LaGrange-Callaway Airport.
The estimated $26 million South Loop contract will awarded on Sept. 18, County Manager Mike Dobbs told the County Commission on Friday.
But the plan doesn’t include other projects that county officials were hoping for: widening West Point Road from Lee’s Crossing to Upper Glass Bridge Road, a connector between Interstate 185 and New Franklin Road, widening of Hamilton Road, capacity improvements on Vernon Road and widening of Davis Road.
“Those project have been identified and have a number, but they don’t make it into the STIP unless money is going to be spent in the next three years for right of way or construction,” said county engineer James Emery.
The state’s Local Assistance Road Program will include resurfacing of 5.4 miles on Lower Big Springs Road, and the repair of five haul routes that were used for construction of the Kia Motors plant in West Point, including Webb-Bartley, Shoemaker, Warner, Webb and Davidson roads.
“That’s good news, getting the haul routes done,” Emery said.
Another haul route, Bartley Road, is expected to be on the list of federal stimulus projects that will be an-nounced in December. The county previouslyhad been shut out of stimulus funding for transportation.
State-aid projects will include repair and minor widening of Gabbettville Road. Troup will have to come up with some matching funds.
“A lot of things we had hoped for didn’t get on the STIP list, but a lot of things did,” Dobbs said.
