Qualifying closed Wednesday for the District 129 seat in the state House of Representatives with four candidates.

The winner of the Nov. 3 special election will fill the remaining year in the term of Republican Vance Smith Jr. of Pine Mountain, who gave up the seat to become commissioner of the state Department of Transportation.

Seeking the post are Smith’s son, Kip Smith, 27, of Columbus; Steve Earls, 56, of Pine Mountain; Jerry Luquire, 71, of Columbus; and Earl T. Davis, 75, of Hamilton. All are Republicans.

District 129 encompasses southern Troup County, including West Point, most of Harris County and a small part of Muscogee County.

Meanwhile, qualifying continues through Friday for municipal elections.

In West Point, incumbent City Council members Darren Kelley and Judy Wilkinson qualified Wednesday.

In Hogansville, Derrick Hay qualified for the City Council post seat currently held by Bobby Joe Frazier. Hay is a member of the LaGrange Sierra Club and a vocal opponent of the Turkey Run landfill being planned for just across the county line from Hogansville’s city limit in northwest Meriwether County.

No candidates qualified Wednesday for LaGrange posts.
