A sinkhole has forced closure of one lane of I-85 northbound near the Georgia-Alabama line.

Repairs are under way and could take up to two days, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The sinkhole is located near mile marker 1.9 in Troup County. One right lane is open to traffic.

“At this time there are no plans for a total road closure. Updates will follow as conditions warrant,” a DOT statement released shortly before 5 p.m. said.

Motorists traveling northbound into Georgia from Alabama should expect heavy delays, according to DOT, and are strongly advised to use alternate routes until further notice. For real-time travel information, visit www.georgia-navigator.com or call 511, 24 hours a day.
