More federal stimulus money is coming to LaGrange - this time toward the South Loop road project.

About $1 million of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds was granted for utility relocation due to the 6.1-mile project that will connect Whitesville and Roanoke roads.

“It would have been a cost we would have had to pay locally,” City Manager Tom Hall said at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Bids for the second phase of South Loop, which were handled by the state, also came up about $6 million less than was budgeted, “which is good news for the state,” he said. Phase two will extend to West Point and Roanoke roads.

Phase one extended Pegasus Parkway into the Callaway South Industrial Park.

In another matter Tuesday, council heard of an expansion to the sewer infrastructure that would increase some residents’ sewer rates by 50 percent.

Public Services director David Brown said the borders of the Long Cane and Shoal Creek watershed basin special districts will be increased to include residents inside the Jackson and Dixie Creek watershed basins.

New developments in the areas will be charged 1 1/2 times the standard city rate. At the moment, the entire area needs about $50 million in upgrades, Brown said.

With this, the city wants to come up with enough money to allow sewer for the upcoming Homecoming development near Crestwood Drive and Young’s Mill Road. The 175-acre community is planned for a total 650 residences.

Also Tuesday, council approved:

— A sidewalk for the Callaway Foundation Inc. to be constructed on the north side of Haralson Street between Gordon and North Greenwood streets. The project is not to exceed $12,000.

— Amending the city’s sign ordinance to allow additional temporary signage for large-scale subdivisions in excess of 50 acres for a year following the final subdivision plat unless modified by council.

— A public hearing for a second sign to be placed outside Whispering Pines apartments at 1515 Hogansville Road after the first was pushed back by road repairs.
