The ninth annual Leggin’ It for Literacy 5K Fun Run kicks off Saturday evening in downtown LaGrange with music and activities for children.

For the second year in a row, the event will take place under the stars in the Country’s Barbecue lot between Vernon and Broad streets. Children’s activities and demonstrations from Towne Fitness start at 7:30 p.m. The band PAPA, featuring Peter and Perrin Alford, will perform before the start of the fun run and walk.

The LaGrange Junior Woman’s Club, which sponsors the benefit for the Troup County Certified Literate Community Program, organizes the event with volunteers from its membership.

“This is my third year as race director, and I absolutely enjoy helping and supporting the event,” said club member Lisa Sapp.

Debbie Burdette, executive director of Troup County CLCP, said she is grateful for the support from club members.

“Their efforts are critical to the success of Leggin’ It for Literacy,” she said. “Purchase a T-shirt, run or walk if you can, or just bring a chair and join the crowd. Leggin’ It for Literacy provides the community with an opportunity to have fun and hear some great music while also supporting the efforts to erase illiteracy in Troup County.”

Registration fee is $25 and race participants will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt and Country’s barbecue sandwich and sweet tea. Registration begins at 7 p.m. The 5K run starts at 10 p.m. and the one-mile fun run is at 10:05 p.m.

A children’s Tot Trot will be at 7:30 p.m. Entry fee is $8, which includes a T-shirt, or a donation of three books with no T-shirt.
