LaGrange had the second-highest unemployment rate among Georgia’s 28 cities with a population of 10,000 or more, topped only by Lawrenceville at 15.5 percent.
Troup County’s rate dropped from 14.2 percent to 13.2 percent during the month. It dropped from 14.6 percent to 13.1 percent in Meriwether County and from 12.4 percent to 12.3 percent in Heard County.
LaGrange and Troup County’s jobless rates in August 2008 were 9.8 percent and 8.6 percent, respectively.
Meanwhile, Georgia’s rate declined from 10.3 percent to 10.2 percent, above the national 9.7 percent rate for the 22nd consecutive month.
Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said efforts must be focused on creating jobs in the private sector, particularly among small and medium-sized businesses. He said the labor department is expanding Georgia Work$, an initiative that significantly reduces employer costs for recruiting, training and hiring.
