Mr. Billy Joe ‘Bill’ Brown, 71, of West Point, died Monday, September 28, 2009 at West Georgia Medical Center.

Mr. Brown was born March 29, 1938 in Cleburne County, AL, son of the late Margie Harvell Brock and Garfield Brown. He had lived here most of his life and was a member and deacon of Bartley Road Church of Christ. He was the owner of BJ’s Quiet Country Barn and a bus driver for the past 6 years with the Troup County School System. He was retired from Georgia Pacific and Visqueen Corporation after 28 years of service. Mr. Brown loved wood working and spent many hours creating furniture and other wooden items for others.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Peggy June Browning Brown; three sons, Butch (Susan) Brown, Chris Brown, and Nicholas Browning, all of West Point; a daughter, Heather (Earnest) Lance of West Point; a foster daughter, Cathy Lee Rice of Phenix City, AL; 14 grandchildren, Christy (Mark) Jones, William (Jeanette) Brown, Andrew (Kimberly) Brown, Hope (Gary) Wood, Adam and Josh Pursley, Krista, D.J., Kelsey, Tre, and Byron Lance, Sadie Browning, and Destiny Rice; seven great-grandchildren, Joseph, Kimberly, Joshua, and Kirsten Brown, Carly and Cassie Brown, and Jordon Jones; two brothers, Lynvel (Diane) Brown of LaGrange; Jerald Brown of Lafayette, AL; a sister, Ann Fischer of Delavan, IL; four step-sisters, Kaye (Tom) Jellison, Mary Ann Fields, Jane (Alton) Mitchell, and Martha Fields, all of Mississippi; two step-brothers, David (Susie) Fields of Alabama and James Fields of Mississippi; seven brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard Browning, Charlie Browning, Billy (Debra) Browning, John (Freita) Browning, Diane (Reese) Hood, and Jerry and Jim Davis, all of LaGrange, and Velma (Elton) McCann of Pine Mountain; a special cousin, Sheila (Lamar) Wilson and family; three aunts, Flora (William) McCollough and Magalene (Doug) Cole, all of LaGrange, and Nell Helms of Illinois; two uncles, Howard (Mary) Harvell of California, and Bill (Rose) Harvell of LaGrange; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel with ministers Frank Barnes and Elmer McCoy officiating. Entombment will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

The family will be at their home and will receive friends at the funeral home from today from 6 to 8 p.m.

Flowers will be accepted or those desiring may contribute to the American Heart Association in memory of Mr. Billy Joe ‘Bill’ Brown.
